Trauma and PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after a traumatic event or from repeated disturbing experiences in the home during childhood. These experiences can leave the brain in a constant state of alert, causing flashbacks, anxiety, and difficulty feeling safe. With compassionate care and treatments like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), the brain can heal, restore balance, and relearn calm.

When the Past Still Feels Present

After a frightening or deeply distressing experience, it can be difficult to feel safe—even when the situation has ended. You may feel constantly on guard, disconnected from others, or overwhelmed by reminders of what happened.

At The Holistic Mental Health Clinic in St. Petersburg, we provide compassionate, trauma-informed care that respects your boundaries and pace.

Understanding Your Responses to Trauma

Trauma can affect emotions, relationships, sleep, and how you respond to everyday situations. You may experience unwanted memories, nightmares, avoidance, irritability, or difficulty trusting others. Some people feel emotionally numb or disconnected from themselves.

Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD. Whether your experiences involve one event or repeated distress, counseling can help you understand your responses without shame or judgment.

How We Can Help

We begin by understanding your concerns and helping you develop skills for managing distress. Your therapist works with you to strengthen emotional regulation and establish a pace that feels manageable.

When appropriate, treatment may include EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or other approaches tailored to your needs. You remain involved in decisions about your care, including when and how difficult experiences are addressed.
